  • Citroen 11B Normale (Big 15) Traction Avant 1950 (Historic Plate) Black

    Description

First presented at Citroën's huge Paris showroom on 18th April 1934, the Traction Avant (Front Drive in French) was designed by André Lefèbvre and Flaminio Bertoni and was a much lighter and faster car than many of its contemporaries. A favourite of WWII Commanders, the French Resistance and later on Film Directors, it was made famous in the UK by the 1960's BBC TV series 'Maigret'.

The first cars were built in various guises from 1934 until production was suspended in June 1941 due to German occupation. After the war production resumed with the more powerful 1911cc engine in the 11B light (15) and the 11B Normale (Big 15) model which had a longer wheelbase.

The Traction Avant pioneered mass-production of three revolutionary innovations which have all been widely adopted since and still used today: front-wheel drive, four-wheel independent suspension and the use of a crash resistant unitary, monocoque body. The car was also one of the earliest mass-production adopters of rack and pinion steering. Production eventually ended in 1957 by which time 759,111 had been manufactured.

This absolutely stunning 11B Normale (Big15) Traction Avant is a fully restored car in 'Concours' condition throughout. It was first registered in Paris in 1950 and was imported to the UK in 1990.

The current owner purchased the car in 2003 and commenced a full restoration of the car approximately 10 years ago and which has only very recently been completed. The history file contains 6 folders of information and invoices and which is far to comprehensive to list here, but suffice to say almost everything was purchased from specialists France for the restoration. We are informed that he cost of all works to date is almost double the asking price!

It does have a rebuilt 1911cc Engine and reconditioned 3 Speed Gearbox and it has had a 12v Battery conversion, Alternator upgrade and upgrade to the lights + indicators incorporated in the Spot & Fog lights.

This car is incredibly nice to drive and we have never had one in this condition before. It is exceptional in every way with unblemished paintwork and a brand new interior which was made from the correct fabric from 1950 along with a new headlining, all of which were sourced from France.

The car just has to be seen and driven to be fully appreciated and If you do want to own one of the best Traction Avant's in the country, then this car has to be a serious contender.

Upon sale the car will come with our own customer care package including a new MOT, pre sales Service, HPI/provenance Checks, 55-point pre-delivery inspection and 6 months mechanical breakdown Parts & Labour Warranty which can be upgraded and extended at additional cost if required.

Car on display @ our showrooms in Mortlake, SW London.
