  • Jaguar XK140 OTS Roadster 1954 (Historic Plate) Red

The Jaguar XK140 was introduced in late 1954 and exterior changes that distinguished it from the XK120 included more substantial front and rear bumpers with overriders, flashing turn signals above the front bumper and although the grille remained the same size, it became a one-piece cast unit with fewer and broader vertical bars. The Jaguar badge was also incorporated into the grille surround and a chrome trim strip ran along the centre of the bonnet and boot lid. An emblem on the boot lid contained the words "Winner Le Mans 1951–3".

The interior was made more comfortable for taller drivers by moving the engine, firewall and dash forward to give 3 inches (76 mm) more legroom. Two 6-volt batteries, one in each front wing were fitted to the Fixed Head Coupe, but Drop Heads and the Open Two Seater (OTS) had a single 12-volt battery installed in the front wing on the passenger side.

The XK140 was powered by the 3.4 litre Jaguar XK double overhead camshaft inline-6 engine with the Special Equipment modifications from the XK120, which raised the specified power by 10 bhp to 190 bhp (142 kW) as standard. The ‘C-Type’ cylinder head carried over from the XK120 producing 210 bhp (157 kW) was optional equipment.

According to the Jaguar Heritage Certificate this beautiful Jaguar XK140 OTS Roadster - Chassis No: 810248 was built in Coventry on 18th November 1954 and was exported to the USA on 14th December 1954.

Unfortunately nothing is known of its early history in the USA and it remained in California we believe, until it was sold and imported to the UK in 1997 and registered here on 1st February 1998.

It had 2 owners here from 1998 until it was purchased by the current owner on 1st May 2001 and over the following 10 years, he commissioned various specialists to restore the car on his behalf.

All works were carried out by Wilmington Classics of Polegate in Sussex, Sussex Engine Centre in Eastbourne, specialist trimmers Polyfacto Ltd in Hailsham, XK specialist Twyford Moors and specialist bodyshop MV Classics in Sussex.

Works carried out included a conversion to RHD, and lots of upgrades including a front Disc Brake Conversion, new Rack & Pinion Steering conversion, uprated cooling system with an Aluminium Radiator and Electric Cooling Fan, new Wiring Looms, new Suspension Bushes including Anti-Roll Bar, new Wheel Bearings, a full Engine rebuild and new Clutch, Stainless Steel Twin Exhaust system, rebuilt Carburettors, new Propshaft Universal Joints, new Wooden Floor panels and new Stove enamelled Wire Wheels and splined hubs replacing the original Steel wheels.

Finally in 2010 specialist bodyshop MV Classics in Hampshire were commissioned by Twyford Moors to completely repaint the car. It was originally built and finished in Pastel Blue with a Dark Blue interior, but it had at some stage in its life in the USA been changed to Red, so it was decided to keep it in the period Jaguar Red. Upon completion of the repaint, it had a fully re-trimmed interior in Biscuit Leather, new carpets, new Soft Top and Side Screens, a complete re-chrome of all Chromework including bumpers, door handles, mouldings and headlamp rims and new Wing mirrors.

The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust trace certificate does not give the engine number, but we know it is not the original 3.4 Litre S6 Engine as shown on the VIN plate - G1293-8 as it now has a 3.4 ‘SE’ spec Engine which is stamped G5699-8S indicating it is has a ‘C’ type cylinder head as shown in the photo’s of the engine with the ‘C’ type cam covers.

The car is in lovely condition overall and drives superbly, but there are a couple of paint blemishes/cracks in the paint (not rust) on the rear deck and o/s/f wing which are easily rectifiable and we will have these rectified upon sale.

It comes with its original Jack & Tools, Grease Gun and its original and repainted rear wheel Arch Spats. It has all history from 1998 onwards including invoices for works carried out and MOT certificates.

Upon sale the car will come with our own customer care package including a new MOT, pre sales Service, HPI/provenance Checks, 55-point pre-delivery inspection and 6 months mechanical breakdown Parts & Labour Warranty which can be upgraded and extended at additional cost if required.
If you are looking for a really nice XK140 with an ‘S’ engine at a very sensible price, then this car should be a serious contender.
