Mercedes-Benz 190 SL 1960 (Historic Plate) Gunmetal
The elegant 190SL Roadster (W121) was manufactured by Mercedes-Benz between May 1955 and February 1963 and a total of 25,881 cars were produced. It was made famous by many celebrities including Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Ringo Starr who all drove one!
It was an attractive and cost-effective alternative to the exclusive and more expensive Mercedes-Benz 300 SL with which it shares some basic styling, but the 190 SL was manufactured on the shorter platform from the Mercedes W120 and the body was made of steel with the exception of the bonnet, boot lid, doors and door Sills which were all made from Aluminium.
It was powered by a new 1.9 Litre 4 cylinder Engine with two twin-choke Solex carburettors and produced 105bhp. The car was available either as a soft-top convertible or with removable hardtop.
According to the Mercedes-Benz Data Card, this beautiful LHD 190SL - VIN No: 12104010016673 and Engine No: 12192110016776 is a Matching Numbers European specification car and was built on 21st December 1959 in Stuttgart and delivered new to its first owner in Zurich, Switzerland on 29th March 1960.
It remained in Switzerland for 24 years until it was purchased by Anita Skelton & Steve Holmgren of Santa Barbara, California, USA in early 1984 when it had covered 94,000 kilometres. Mr & Mrs Holmgren kept the car for a further 33 years and there are lots of invoices in the file for servicing and repairs carried out from 1984 through to December 2016. The car was re-trimmed in America in 2014/15 and in 2016 it had a top-end Engine overhaul including a new timing Chain and guides, new heater and heater controls including pipes, Carburettors overhauled, new fuel pump, electrical works and much more totalling $37,000.
They covered approximately 79,000 Kilometers (49,000 miles) in the car before eventually selling it in May 2017 when it was bought by the current English owner who imported the car to the UK and registered it here on 14th September 2017 with the period number plate 860 UYX
Upon arrival in the UK the new owner had the car completely stripped to bare metal and the colour was changed from White to the beautiful and period Mercedes Graphite Grey Metallic which was only completed in 2019. In addition to the repaint, all exterior chrome was removed and sent away for re-chroming, a new Soft Top was fitted along with all new rubber seals and the Hard Top was repainted and refurbished, a new Starter Motor, new Brake cylinders and a service which all came to approximately £23,000.
The car has still has its original KMS speedometer as fitted when new and it is now reading 74,150 Kms, but we know that it's true mileage is 174,150 Kms (108,214 Miles) from new!
Finished in Graphite Grey Metallic with Red Leather trim, new Burgundy Soft Top, Factory Hard Top in Graphite Grey, original 1.9 Litre 4 Cylinder Engine, twin Solex Carburettors, 4 Speed Gearbox, original Becker stereo, refurbished White Bakelite Steering Wheel, original Steel Wheels with re-chrome Hub Caps, re-chromed bumpers and mouldings and it comes with both Exterior and Indoor Car Covers.
This car is in fantastic condition throughout and drives beautifully and really does need to be seen and driven to be fully appreciated.
The car is of course Tax and MOT exempt although upon sale it will come with a new MOT and our own 6 Month Mechanical Warranty.
