Mercedes-Benz 280 SL 'Pagoda' Sports 1971 (J) Beige
Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1963 the Mercedes 230SL (W113) was a completely new car replacing the outgoing 190SL. it was a truly modern car for its time and was constructed to the high level of craftsmanship expected from Mercedes-Benz. The car was designed by Paul Bracq and were produced from 1963 starting with the 230SL then the 250SL in 1967 only followed by the 280SL in late 1967 until it ceased production in 1971.
Their distinctive "Pagoda" hardtop roof designed by Bela Barenyi, gave them their contemporary nick-name and the model quickly became a very popular car among the elite thanks to its combination of luxury and high style. Mercedes-Benz would call the W113 a 'Grand Tourer' with a unique combination of sports car performance and saloon car comfort.
Imported from California in 2010, this beautiful 280SL Pagoda Sports is one of the last of the 830 113 models produced in 1971. Finished in its original build specification and colour scheme of Sandy Beige (467H) with a matching Hard Top. Originally Brown MB Tex trim, it now has new Black Leather seats, Black Mohair Soft Top and Black carpets, original rebuilt 2.8 litre Engine, Automatic Transmission, Power Assisted Steering and original Steel Wheels with full face colour coded wheel trims.
According to the Mercedes Benz Datacard, it is a 'matching numbers' car with its original Engine & transmission and it has a history file containing its original Mercedes build details/specifications and PDI sheet, lots of invoices dating back to 1972 plus a copy of its original Californian Title Certificate and the USA Mercedes Dealer list brochure.
It has just been the subject of a 9 month refurbishment by a specialist restorer including a bare metal repaint, new leather trim and all existing chrome work was rechromed. The car did have lots of new ancillary components fitted and it also has a retro Blaupunkt Melbourne 120 Stereo/CD player with Bluetooth and electric aerial. The engine was rebuilt in 2015 and according to all of the information in the history file, we know that the car has now covered a genuine 141,000 miles from new, but less than 500 since the rebuild.
Offering timeless styling, a very high build quality indicative of the marque and excellent usability, the W113 280SL is quickly becoming one of Mercedes-Benz’s most iconic and sought-after models of all time. This car is definitely one of the best examples currently for sale and it really is beautiful to drive.
