Pininfarina Spider Azzurra 1984 (A) Red
The Fiat 124 Spider was launched at the 1966 Turin Motor Show and was designed by Tom Tjaarda who worked for Pininfarina and also designed some of the most beautiful Ferraris of the time. It had various upgrades during its life including 5 different twin cam engines culminating with the Fiat 2000 Spider in 1982.
Pininfarina took over full production of the Spider from Fiat in 1983 and it was and still is the only car ever to have been soley made by Pininfarina in its entirety and it was relaunched in Europe at the Geneva Motor Show as the Pininfarina Spider Europa. In 1984 it was renamed the Pininfarina 'Azzurra' in honour of Italy’s racing yacht entry into the Louis Vuitton Cup.
There were many small but significant changes to the Fiat 124 Spider with the most visible being the exterior door mirrors mounted in the glass 1/4 lights and the side emblems changed from the ‘f’ symbol to the Pininfarina script. It came standard with Leather trim, Air Conditioning, a new vertical center console design integral with the dashboard and incorporating a pair of fresh air vents, better instrumentation, Alloy Wheels, new carpets, better boot space with the Battery now located inside and the Jack placement improved. In addition the silly little back seats of the Fiats were removed providing a useful luggage shelf.
Standard equipment were electric windows and a remote electric boot opener and a 1995cc Fuel injected engine producing 104bhp, a Five Speed Manual Gearbox and Disc Brakes on all 4 wheels.
This Pininfarina Spider Azzura - VIN No: ZFRAS00B5E5504526 was built in late 1984 in the Pininfarina factory in San Giorgio Canavese on the outskirts of Turin, Italy and it was exported to the USA and was only first registered in Hinsdale Illinois on 29th January 1986. The car remained in Illinois before going to Georgia in 2007 and then to Arizona in 2008 where it remained with the last owner until being sold to the current owner who imported the car from Arizona to England in June 2018 and it is now UK registered as A551 TBW.
The car is finished in its original colour scheme of Rosso Vivo with Beige Leather Seats, Beige carpets, new Beige vinyl Soft Top, its original 1995cc Fi Engine & 5 Speed Gearbox, Ansa Sports Exhaust System, Stereo/Radio/CD Player and original 14" Cromodora Alloy Wheels.
The last American owner fitted new early Fiat 124 Chrome Bumpers and also replaced the original Leather Seats with the high back Mazda MX5 Seats as seen in the photo's, but the original bumpers and seats, both of which are in very good condition do come with the car and can be refitted if required.
The car has only covered a genuine 50,250 miles from new and it does have a good history file with lots of invoices including a Carfax Vehicle History Report giving change of ownership details and confirmation of the mileage from 1986 through to 2018. It also had its Timing Belt changed at 39,500 miles.
It is in beautiful condition throughout and really does drives superbly. It was repainted in 2008 and the paintwork is generally very nice with only a few small blemishes evident which you would expect after 10 years and the interior is lovely.
This is a very rare car today and the 124 Spider was nicknamed the 'Baby Ferrari' upon its launch due to its resemblance to the Ferrari 275 GTS.
When Paolo Pininfarina was asked by Octane Magazine what his favorite design of all time was, he was standing next to a humble Pininfarina Azzurra and a $3million Ferrari Sergio prototype in their Milan museum and he said: "I love the 124 Spider...I believe these cars would still sell in great numbers if it was still made today."
