  • Volkswagen Karmann Ghia 1970 (J) Green

    Description

The VW Karmann Ghia was designed by Luigi Segre of Ghia in Turin and built by Karmann in Osnabruck, Germany with the first models exhibited at European Motor Shows at the beginning of 1955.
The type 14 as it was known was based upon an amended VW Beetle chassis and came with standard VW Beetle mechanicals.
In September 1961 Volkswagen introduced the VW 1500 Karmann Ghia or Type 34, based on its new Type 3 platform, featuring Volkswagen's new flat 1500cc engine design and styling by Italian engineer Sergio Sartorelli. It was known as the "Der Große Karmann" ("the big Karmann") in Germany, "Razor Edge Ghia" in the United Kingdom or "European Ghia" in the United States.
In total, 364,401 Karmann Ghia Coupés and 80,899 Convertibles were built between 1955 and 1974 when production in Osnabruck ceased and Karmann Ghia handed over the baton to the Golf-based Scirocco.

This very nice VW 1600 Karmann-Ghia Coupé was built in September 1970 and we believe it first registered in Jersey on 28th June 1971.
It is finished in Green with a White roof and has a lovely re-trimmed Tan Leather interior with Black carpets, its original 1584cc Engine, 4 Speed Gearbox and its original steel wheels with chrome hub caps. The 1.6 litre Engine produces 50 bhp and is said to be able to achieve a maximum speed of 86 mph.
This car was the subject of a total loss insurance claim in 1995 but although repairable, the insurance company deemed the costs exceeded the vehicle’s value at the time. However, it was repaired and restored in the late 1990's and sold in 2001. It was purchased by the current lady owner in May 2003 and she had a complete new interior fitted by specialist Bernard Newbury shortly afterwards and this included new Leather seats, new carpets, new Headlining, new Sun Visors and new door Cards - all costing £2,600!
The bodywork is very presentable despite the odd bubble here and there, but it is not a rusty car by any means. There is insufficient history with the car prior to 2000 so we do not know exactly what has been done to it and cannot confirm the current recorded mileage of 74,000 as being genuine.
The car does drive very well and before sale it will come with a new MOT, Service and 6 months Warranty.
Further photo's to follow upon completion of our showroom preparation.
