About this Triumph TR3A
DEPOSIT TAKEN: 05/10/2022
In 1957 the Triumph TR3 was updated with the 'face-lifted' model which is commonly referred to as the Triumph TR3A but not badged as such.
It was a minor update from the TR3 with a new wider front grill, exterior door handles and a lockable boot handle.
Total production of the TR3A between 1957 and 1962 was 58,236 making it the third best-selling TR after the TR6 and TR7 and it is estimated that only 9,500 of the original 58,000 built survive today.
The TR3 was also the first production car to include front Disc Brakes as standard and was known for its superior braking ability, making it a real Rally Car favourite.
According to the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate and Standard Motor Company Limited's Register, this Triumph TR3A - Chassis No: TS 22210L was built in Coventry on Tuesday 24th September 1957 between 7.30am and 2.00pm and was originally finished in Black with Vermillion Red Leather Seats, a Fawn Hood and Side Screens, Heater, Imperial Calibrated Instruments, White Wall Tyres and LHD Export Specification. It was despatched to a Triumph dealer in North America and remained there for 34 years before being sold and exported back to the UK in 1991.
It was subsequently sold by a Mr A N Mumford from Suffolk (we think a relation of TR specialist Ken Mumford) to a Mr John Noel Murphy, who owned a well known Jaguar Parts business in Coventry in November 1991 for the sum of £3,350 and their is a receipt in the file for this. Mr Murphy commenced a full 'Nut and Bolt Body-Off Chassis' rebuild and conversion back to RHD over the following 5 years in his warehouse in Coventry.
The colour was changed to the period Triumph colour of Pearl White but he retained the interior colour of Vermillion Red and fitted a completely new interior including new Leather Seats, new deluxe wool carpets, a new Red Everflex Soft Top and Side Screens, a new Tonneau Cover, a Works Rally Wooden Mota-Lita Steering Wheel and fitted a pair of Lucas Rally 4 Headlamps and Spot Lights. The car was fitted with a 2138cc Engine and this was completely rebuilt with new pistons, liners, camshaft, oil pump, crankshaft regrind and new bearings, and the original gearbox (comes with the car) was replaced with a newly rebuilt 4 speed Triumph TR4 Gearbox and Overdrive, a TR4 steering rack, new TR6 front suspension with Disc Brake conversion, replacement of all old chrome-work and hinges and a new set of Chrome Wire Wheels.
Upon completion of the restoration, it was MOT'd on March 9th 1996 with 5 miles indicated on the speedometer and was then registered here in the UK on 28th June 1996 with the period number plate PSY 117.
The car was used sparingly by Mr Murphy over the next 6 years only covering 1,244 miles when it was last MOT'd in October 2002 and it was then placed in storage in his warehouse from 2003 until 2021 before being taken to his daughters house in Somerset. Unfortunately, due to ill health the car was never driven by him again and he sadly passed away in October 2021.
We have been given the car by his daughter to sell for the family and we have to say that this car is still in lovely condition throughout considering it was restored 26 years ago now and it really does need to be seen to appreciate how nice it is. The total mileage covered by this car now since 1996 is only 1,308 Miles and it is a great opportunity for someone to buy a nicely rebuilt TR3A with some good upgrades.
Upon sale the car will be given a full service and checkover/recommissioning + we will put a new MOT on the car (although now exempt) and it will also come with our own 6 Month Mechanical Warranty.
Car on display @ our showrooms in Mortlake, SW London.
